Joyland - Stephen King I really enjoyed Joyland, the new Stephen King supernatural thriller. Published by Hard Case Crime, a company that specialized in both re-issued and new crime noir, Stephen King feels at home in this slightly retro mystery tale of a young man working at an amusement park. It is part mystery, part coming-of-age tale, and part supernatural horror although the horror portion is really watered down for a King novel. Nonetheless the author is well in his element and has written one of the most intimate and quiet of his stories. It is the relationships in the story that make this work. King also has some really strong and vivid supporting characters throughout this amusement park tapestry. If there are still some people out there who haven't read Stephen King because they think his books are gruesome and scary, they might be pleasantly pleased at this moderately paced and sensitive novel.
