There is no mistaking this violent East Texas thriller with any other writer but Lansdale. All the hallmark signs are there except maybe the non-stop wisecracks and wit. It is there but not as plentiful as in the Hap and Leonard novels. Waltz of Shadows seems more serious and this may be the problem. It is a fairly conventional crime noir/revenge tale without the usual Lansdale twists. Yet it is still Lansdale so it is a cut above the more usual mainstream efforts. While I enjoyed it I would not recommend it as a Lansdale first read. Go check out the Hap and Leonard series first.
