My favorite Bloch collection and just as good...maybe better...than the earlier Opener of the Way. Bloch had moved away from the Lovecraftian influence and found his niche is a more modern urban/suburban setting. Along with Richard Matheson, Bloch needs to be seen as one of the founders of modern post-war horror fiction. This collection focuses on his supernatural tales, The star of the collection is The Hell Bound Train which made off with the Hugo in 1959 as best science-fiction short fiction...even if it is not science-fiction. But I also like "The Sorcerer's Apprentice" and "The Dream Makers".
